Safe Hand boasts a spacious engine room, since the diesel power-plant is significantly smaller that the original steam engine.


Propulsive power supplied by a Kelvin T8. Installed in 1966, this normally aspirated beast develops 240BHP @ 1000rpm

Engine room switch panel, controlling 24VDC and 110VAC systems.

Look aft over main engine. Coal bunkers and fresh water tanks from her days under steam power can be seen to the left and right.





Auxiliary Engine 1. An air cooled lister HA2 developing 27hp. Used to charge batteries, generate 110v, and pump water to/from ballast tanks, bilges, and fore hoses.


Forward/reverse hydraulic gearbox with a 3.5/1 reduction ratio, spinning a 36" diameter prop. In event of pressure loss, it is possible to lock up the box, and provide drive in forwards only.
